A delivery call was running behind. Someone’s kid needed the Wi-Fi password. Two parents had overlapping “wellness time” on the calendar that nobody had the heart to cancel but everybody quietly resented.

I noticed one teammate had gone offline without explanation. Later, when I checked in, they finally admitted:

“I think I had a panic attack today. My chest wouldn’t stop tightening. I had to lie on the bathroom floor. I’ve started taking something for anxiety… I didn’t want to say anything at work.”

Not just stress. Panic. And not their first time. This is someone smart, kind, competent, and still cracking under the weight of everything.

And I found myself asking: Is this happening to more people than we realize?

The Juggling Act

Even if you’ve never hit the floor in panic, you probably know the grind: up before dawn, kids to school or daycare, a commute (even if it’s just across the hall), meetings stacked to the ceiling, emails bleeding into dinner, “quick” check-ins after bedtime.

And that’s in families doing “fine.” For single parents—or singles juggling everything alone—the pressure only multiplies.

The truth? Coping isn’t thriving. “Fine” is not whole. And yet, that’s where most of us live every day.

The Medication Era

The numbers back it up. By 2023, nearly 1 in 4 U.S. adults were receiving mental health treatment—most of it prescriptions. Research shows longer hours and higher workloads directly correlate with higher rates of anxiety and depression.

These aren’t just statistics. They’re warnings. They tell us what happens when we push human beings—especially caregivers—past their limits.

The Wellness Paradox

And yet, companies keep doubling down on “wellness.” The industry is now worth over $60 billion globally. In the U.S., more than 80% of large employers offer programs: mindfulness apps, yoga stipends, resilience workshops.

But outcomes aren’t improving. They’re getting worse.

Why? Because wellness programs often address symptoms, not causes. They ask people to pause and breathe while workloads stay the same. They offer perks without changing the system that created the distress in the first place.

When Even the “Good” Workplaces Struggle

At Agile Six, the company I co-founded, we try to lead differently. We’re a remote-first, values-driven tech consultancy. We offer unlimited wellness hours, normalize therapy, support mental health, and encourage shorter weeks whenever possible.

And yet—even here—people still struggle. Not because they want to leave, but because of anxiety, panic, or the quiet silence when someone vanishes for “personal reasons.”

It’s not a failure of leadership or goodwill. It’s a sign that employer solutions alone aren’t enough when the system outside remains unyielding.

This is where the truth hits hardest:

Yoga classes get added to already packed calendars.

Meditation apps are prescribed to people who barely have time to shower.

Burned-out parents are nudged into journaling challenges they’ll later feel guilty for skipping.

Let’s call it what it is: not care, but productivity theater.

The AI Crossroads

Here’s the opportunity—and the danger.

We’re entering an age where AI will multiply productivity in ways we’ve never seen. Since the 40-hour workweek was standardized, productivity has already increased by 800%. Families haven’t received any of that gain back as time together. Instead, the opposite has happened: longer hours, dual-income households stretched to the breaking point, and more pressure at home and at work.

Now, with AI, we face a crossroads. We could finally return time to people—aligning benefits, leave, and work schedules around wholeness and family. Or we could let blind capitalist ambition seize the gains, demanding even more from already stretched humans.

And make no mistake: signs point to the latter.

The 996 Warning

In Silicon Valley, the tension over work-life balance never really disappears. Some leaders champion flexibility and smarter work, while others double down on the daily grind, convinced that success requires sacrifice.

One entrepreneur making headlines is Daksh Gupta, a 23-year-old Indian-origin founder who has gone viral more than once for his unapologetic embrace of “9-9-6”—working 9am to 9pm, six days a week. He insists long hours and high stress are essential to achieving big goals, and his comments have struck a chord in parts of the Valley that still idolize hustle as a virtue.

For now, it’s just a few voices. But here’s the risk: these ideas can spread. Already, corporate spending data shows some San Francisco workers are increasingly active on Saturdays, suggesting grind culture is edging back into the mainstream.

This is the opposite of progress. Instead of AI freeing us, it risks chaining us tighter to work. If 996 gains traction as Silicon Valley’s cultural export, the American family is not just at risk—it’s in jeopardy.

Beyond Wellness: A National Debate

This is my confession as a leader: life has gotten more complicated, not less. And no matter how many benefits I add, it feels harder and harder to create a workplace where people can be whole.

That’s why I’m writing my new book, Twenty Five Hours. Because wellness programs won’t save us—not in their current form. What we need is a national debate about wholeness.

If we don’t act now, AI will widen the gap: productivity will soar while families, caregivers, and communities are stretched past their limits. But if we seize this moment, we could do something extraordinary: return time to people, reshape the workweek, and finally prioritize thriving over coping.

And the contrast couldn’t be sharper. While some entrepreneurs push for 12-hour days, six days a week, I believe the real opportunity of this era is the opposite: to shorten the workweek, reframe benefits, and give American families back what they’ve been denied for nearly a century—time together.

This isn’t just a workplace issue. It’s a societal one. And it belongs at the highest levels of business, government, and culture.

Join the Conversation

I don’t have all the answers, but I know this: if we let AI’s gains flow only to profit, the 996 culture will spread—and the American family won’t survive it.

Twenty Five Hours is my call to flip the script: to take the benefits of automation and reinvest them in human time.

But I want to hear from you too. How should we reshape work in the AI era? What would thriving—not coping—look like in your life?

Drop your thoughts in the comments. Share this with someone who needs to read it. Et leveringsmøte var forsinket. Noen sitt barn trengte Wi-Fi-passordet.

Kappløpet i hverdagen

Hvorfor?

Og likevel – selv her – sliter folk.

Her ligger både muligheten – og faren.
