My favorite guilty pleasure? Generational humor. Gen X—my people—takes jabs at Baby Boomers for being hands-off parents, then turns to Millennials and Gen Z and smugly declares, “We didn’t need all that coddling.”

But under the satire lies a deeper truth: we are five generations sharing the same workplaces—Traditionalists, Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z—and we’re still trying to understand each other. While older generations bring experience, younger ones are often branded with unfair labels like “fragile” or “lazy.”

What if they’re not fragile at all?

What if they’re actually better equipped than we were to deal with the complexity of modern life?

Trauma Isn’t New—But Talking About It Is

Emerging generations have been inundated with collective traumas: school shootings, climate anxiety, social justice reckonings, and a pandemic that reshaped their childhoods. Rather than tough it out or bury the pain, they’re seeking help—openly. They’re demanding safe workplaces and accommodations, not to be coddled, but to survive and thrive.

That’s not weakness. That’s wisdom.

Older generations, myself included, might feel disoriented by this shift. But what if their demands are invitations? Invitations to revisit our own unresolved trauma, to recognize our neurodivergence, and to start building workplaces that reflect the full spectrum of human experience?

Redefining Normal: Neurodiversity and the New Workplace

Neurodiversity simply means that people think, learn, and feel differently—and that these differences are not deficits. Younger generations aren’t just asking for inclusion; they’re creating it. They’re turning their identities into superpowers—pioneering businesses, building brands, leveraging content creation to reach millions.

Smart companies aren’t just accommodating neurodivergent employees—they’re thriving because of them. A trauma-informed, neuro-inclusive workplace isn’t a perk anymore. It’s a necessity for sustainability.

What’s Really Behind the Mask

I’ve worn masks in my life—professional, emotional, cultural. But it wasn’t until I started removing them that I found purpose. And the people who helped me do that were often younger colleagues who encouraged vulnerability, accepted nuance, and understood the value of psychological safety.

They helped me understand that embracing one’s whole story—trauma, neurodivergence, identity—isn’t just healing. It’s transformational. It’s what allows teams and businesses to be human first, productive second.

The Dangerous Cycle of Humiliation

Psychologist Evelin Lindner calls it the “humiliation-dehumanization-violence” cycle. When people are denied dignity, they are pushed to the margins. History reminds us what follows. Gen Z seems to understand this instinctively. They work to dismantle harmful hierarchies and redefine leadership not as dominance but as mutual empowerment.

We should all take note.

Leading With Humanity

Whether you’re a new grad or a seasoned CEO, the future demands that we honor the full complexity of human beings. That includes understanding trauma, celebrating neurodiversity, and acknowledging that no one should have to check their authenticity at the door to succeed.

This is not a trend. It’s an evolutionary step.

A Call to Gentleness—and Action

To leaders: Your responsibility isn’t just to grow profits—it’s to grow people. Create environments where everyone feels safe, heard, and seen. Normalize mental health days. Recognize the invisible labor that comes with existing while healing.

To colleagues of every generation: Let’s stop mocking each other’s survival strategies and start recognizing them as strengths. Gentleness is not weakness. Inclusion is not optional. And healing is not a solo act.

Because happiness—true, deep, collective happiness—demands that we start showing up as whole people, for ourselves and for each other.
